Ax-17

Like the F-111, the AX-17 would be a swing-wing aircraft. This would allow it to sweep the wings forward for stability when landing, and sweep the wings back for high speed flight.

Steve Douglass has linked this aircraft with the incident at Boscombe Down in 1994. This event has also been assosiated with the Aurora and Project, but witness reports seem to describe HALO rather than an AX-17 or Aurora.

In September 1994, an unusual aircraft was seen over Amarillo, Texas. The plane was dumping fuel, preparing for an emergency landing. On a scanner, the pilot of an aircraft using the unknown callsign "Omega" was heard reporting a malfunction. Two F-111's were acting as chase-planes.

Douglass also has a photograph taken recently which shows two unusual triangles. He believes it "could" be two AX-17's, but admits that it could be F-117's, Tornado's, or F-14's. If they are "AX-17's", they may well be based at Cannon AFB. Cannon has no mission at present, but a large modernisation programme has taken place, and local people have been assured that new planes will be stationed at the Air Base.

F-111

In an article in the Magazine "Popular Science", Douglass also raised the interesting point that, with it's wings swept back, the AX-17 would form a "Perfect 75 Degree Triangle". Could Chris Gibson have seen not an Aurora, but an AX-17 refuelling?

There is, however, some doubt about the existance of an "AX-17". Early this year the USAF announced a new programme, the "FB-X", which is to develop a Stealth Replacement for the F-111 and F-15E. It's supposed to enter service in 2018. This announcement casts doubt on the AX-17. After all, why have a new programme to develop something you already have?
